Position Overview:

The Director of Campus Safety is responsible for developing and implementing programs and strategies to improve the safety and security of students, staff, and property. This includes collaborating with administration in providing a safe learning environment for all students and staff members, developing a comprehensive professional development plan for safety and support personnel, and developing a comprehensive district safety and crisis plan for all school sites. The Director also collaborates with the Physical Plant Services and Technology Departments to select, administer and maintain hardware and systems that support security. The Director acts as a liaison between the school district and outside entities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement or related field/major preferred
  • Minimum of five years' experience as a police officer, facility security officer, or other security experience
  • Possess a valid Illinois driver's license
  • Experience in crisis management, investigation of individuals/or incidents, facility security personnel protection and training
  • Working knowledge of computer and electronic information services
  • Experience in school security and safety training preferred
  • Experience with incident management systems
  • Experience in or willingness to learn the tenants of restorative justice practices
  • Present a professional image and interacts professionally with faculty, staff, students, and the community 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of laws that pertain to school safety and security
  • Knowledge of de-escalation strategies and ability to lead efforts to de-escalate situations
  • Knowledge in working with technical communication systems, programs, and equipment during daily operations and emergency situations
  • Skilled at communication, particularly the ability to discuss concerns with all parties, de-escalate situations, and professionally execute any necessary actions
  • Skilled in interacting with students and working collaboratively with parents and staff members relative to disciplinary matters or situations impacting the safety of students
  • Ability to build positive and professional relationships with students and staff members and leverage those relationships to establish and maintain productive and safe learning environments and common areas of the building
  • Ability to exercise dignity and respect when interacting with students, staff and community members at all times.
  • Keep abreast of current best practices and procedures in school safety and security
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate records when dealing with sensitive information and security matters
  • Ability to use electronic devices and commonly used software including security camera software, access control software, disaster planning and communication software, student management software, Microsoft Office, Google Apps for Education, and other cloud-based software. Must have the capacity to learn and become proficient with new computer software as needed with minimal guidance.
  • Ability to prepare reports as required by the Illinois State Board of Education concerning evacuation and safety 

Responsibilities:

District and Leadership Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as a liaison between the district, local, county, state and federal police, and fire officials
  2. Facilitate the annual review of District Emergency Procedures with members of the Safety and Security Committee and representatives from local Police and Fire Departments to fulfill state statutory requirements. (105 ILCS 128/) School Safety Drill Act
  3. Ensure compliance with mandatory School Safety Drills: a. Building Evacuation (Fire/Hazardous Materials/Bomb Threat) b. Bus Evacuation c. Severe Weather/Shelter in Place (Tornado) d. Law Enforcement Drill (Run, Hide, Fight) completed within first 90 Days of school
  4. Observe school safety drills at all campuses when formally conducted in conjunction with local Fire Department members per state requirement
  5. Visit all campuses and off-site district athletic facilities frequently to assess the implementation of safety measures and identify areas for improvement
  6. Conduct annual security audits of all district facilities. Present a report of findings to the Safety & Security Committee
  7. Write and submit applications for safety and security grant opportunities
  8. Meet monthly, or as needed, to review building schedules and usage with the Campus Facilities Managers, Athletic Director, Student Activities Coordinators, Principal, or other appropriate officials
  9. Lead new initiatives related to safety and security procedures, equipment or facility improvements, coordinating with the Physical Plant Services and Technology Departments
  10. Assumes responsibility for his/her own professional growth and development through membership and participation in professional organizations, attendance at regional, state, and national meetings, and enrollment in advanced courses 

Campus Security and Safety Responsibilities:

  1. Recruits and hires all Campus Security staff
  2. Manages district Campus Security staff, including evaluation and supervision of all security staff; plans and implements security staff in-service training (including non-violent conflict resolution and customer service)
  3. Provide training to Campus Safety staff on an on-going basis
  4. Oversees campus parking, including the assignment of spaces
  5. Oversees campus traffic, including development of campus traffic plans for school days and special events and training for staff involved in managing traffic
  6. Ensure that security equipment (radios, cameras, attendance management systems, visitor management system, etc.) are in proper working order
  7. Holds weekly meetings with campus security leads and regular department meetings
  8. Schedules and assigns staff as appropriate for daily and special events
  9. Oversees the planning and logistics for large events run at both campuses
  10. Manages and approves electronic payroll and time off requests for Campus Safety Staff
  11. Develops and monitors the annual Safety budget in collaboration with administration
  12. Provides feedback and recommendations to the administration related to school-day supervision
  13. Assists with the management and supervision of crowd control for large school events and athletic contests (before-during and after school hours)
  14. Oversees scheduling for security of summer programs
  15. Responds to any threats reported to the school district through the online "Trev Tips" link in collaboration with administration
  16. Maintains lost property and lost property reports
  17. Other duties as assigned
