BACKGROUND:

The Village of Fox Lake (population 10,700) is located 55 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and 20 miles west of Waukegan, Illinois. Fox Lake is located in Lake and McHenry counties. The Village is located on the South Shore of Pistakee Lake, Nippersink Lake, and Fox Lake, three connected water bodies that form part of the Chain O’Lakes system. The Village of Fox Lake has a total area of 9.942 square miles of which around 20% is water.

The Village of Fox Lake is seeking interested applicants for the position of Telecommunicator, for the Village’s FoxComm 911 Center. The FoxComm 911 Center is an Accredited Center of Excellence awarded by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch operating a multi- agency 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point owned by the Village of Fox Lake that provides police, fire and EMS communications for four Police Departments and three Fire Protection Districts. FoxComm utilizes computer aided dispatch, Zetron touch screen radio and phone systems and provides Emergency Medical instruction via Medical Priority ProQA Emergency Medical Dispatch protocols.

FoxComm is a 24 hour, 7 days a week operation and applicants must have the desire and ability to work any shift, including weekends and holidays.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties dose not exclude them if the work is similar, related of logical to the position.

• Operation of a two-way radio system to dispatch emergency personnel;
• Operates  LEADS  and  NCIC  terminal,  TTD  and TTY equipment. Performs general clerical duties;
• Receiving 911 system multi-jurisdictional calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services;
• Using a computer aided dispatch system;
• Maintaining contact with all units on assignment while consistently disseminating information and updating the status and location of calls;
• Dispatching first responders according to established procedures, operating various telecommunications equipment, and performing related work as assigned;
• Map reading is required;
• Ability to remain calm under extremely stressful situations while making rapid and sound independent decisions is crucial;
• Ability to exercise patience with callers who may be emotionally distraught, intoxicated, or difficult to understand;
• Memorization of codes, names, locations, and other detailed information is required;
• Must communicate tactfully with residents, public safety personnel, and coworkers;
• Must have the ability to complete licensing requirements;
• Entering and retrieving information from an assortment of computerized files
• Must be able to work rotating shifts during training, shifts as assigned, including weekends and holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Police/Fire/EMD dispatching experience is preferred;
• Must possess effective oral and written communication skills;
• Able to multitask and work in a stressful environment;
• Must be able to type 40 WPM, pass job simulation test and background investigation;
• Position requires a high school diploma or G.E.D;
• Spanish bilingual skills desired;
• Requires working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office.
