REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidates must be at least 21-years-old
  • Candidates must hold a current Law Enforcement Certification by the State of Illinois
  • Candidates must live within a 60 mile radius of the City of Rockford

AVAILABILITY:

Days & Hours will vary, must be available most nights and most weekends

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Follows standard operating procedures, looks for law /ordinance violations in parks while maintaining park safety.
  • Ensures appropriate communications with victims, offenders, citizens, community groups, 911 center, states attorney, and other law enforcement officers.
  • Responds to and handles criminal and civil matters that are dispatched through the 911 center or the park district police station following appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Responds to internal and external calls that do not require law enforcement response.
  • Completes police reports, traffic citations, notice to appears, and all other paperwork as required.
  • Responds to emergency calls while operating emergency lights and siren in a controlled manner.
  • Checks the interior and exterior of buildings to ensure that they are secure.
  • Enforces all local traffic ordinances and traffic laws from the Illinois Vehicle Code.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency requests from other law enforcement agencies/officers.
  • Picks up and secures, transports, and deposits United States Currency from park district facilities to the bank.
  • Enforces all local, state, and federal laws and ordinances as necessary.
  • Provides police presence for safety and security at park district events and functions.
  • Performs criminal and non-criminal investigations against persons and property.
  • Refers citizens to appropriate social agencies.
  • Provides general and pertinent information to citizens request and district employees.
  • Performs daily inspection of all assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Visually inspects park district property to ensure that it is safe and secure.
  • Responds to intrusion, hold-up, and fire alarms and performs building checks, then resets non valid alarms.
  • Oversees the safe passage of vehicles and pedestrian traffic when required.
  • Provides general supervision to part-time patrol/events sworn officers and event security officers.
  • Attends court proceedings and represents the Rockford Park District Police Department as required.
  • Performs undercover activities as directed.
  • Attends in-house and state-certified training in order to remain current in law enforcement procedures.
  • Prepares and presents classes, meetings, or displays to the public as required.
  • Performs special patrols as required (Bicycle, Motorcycle and Snowmobile).
  • Makes arrests as needed, following appropriate department procedures.
  • Ensures that evidence is safely transported and secured as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with 2-3 years of other schooling preferably in Law Enforcement and Political Science and less than one year of related work experience
  • Days & Hours will vary, must be available most nights and most weekends
  • Professional knowledge of state, federal, and ordinance laws
  • Practical knowledge of computers and in-car computers
  • Professional knowledge from Police Training Institute
  • Practical knowledge of defensive tactics and firearms
  • Routine knowledge or park district policies
  • Will be required to use computers, mobile data computers (in-car computers), Police Radio, Emergency Lights, Sirens, Squad Car, Firearms, Handcuffs, Pepper Spray, Mobile Radio, Digital Camera, Cell Phone, CRIMESTAR, Word, Alerts, Internet, Laptop, Drug Testing Equipment, Copier, Police Baton, PBT's, Tazers, ATV's, Bicycles, Motorcycles, and Golf Carts 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally Exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently Exerting up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which workers must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

VISUAL/HEARING and OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Far vision: clarity of vision at 20 feet or more
  • Near vision: clarity of vision at 20 inches or less
  • Mid-range vision: clarity of vision at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet
  • Depth perception: the ability to judge distance and space relationships, so as to see objects where and as they actually are
  • Color vision: ability to identify and distinguish colors
  • Field of vision: ability to observe an area up or down or to the right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds with no less than a 40 db loss at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through verbal communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.
