POSITION SUMMARY:

This is an advanced operational position responsible for dispatching emergency responders to calls requiring fire and/or medical services. Telecommunicators answer radio communications and telephone calls for emergent and non-emergency matters. Telecommunicators require extensive training and familiarization with emergency medical services and fire call-taking and dispatching. It entails the use of complex radio and 9-1-1 systems. Telecommunicators are supervised directly by the Communications Shift Supervisors and Director. Key character traits required for this position are the ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure, work cooperatively with others, friendliness, a desire to serve the public, and the willingness to be a great teammate. Telecommunicators work mostly independently and must exercise sound judgment and decision-making skills.

HOURS OF WORK:

Full-time: As determined by the CBA (currently, 2190 hours each year, with staff working four consecutive 12-hour days followed by four days off).

Part-time: Varies; usually 12-32 hours each week.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school 

Preferred Qualifications:

• At least one (1) year of experience as a public safety telecommunicator
• Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification
• CPR certification 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

• Answer calls by radio and telephone and dispatch responders as required
• Provide instructions and information to callers and responders
• Input calls for fire alarms, fire, fire prevention, and medical services
• Transmit orders and follow instructions as given by command officers
• Monitor fire alarms
• Monitor all required radio frequencies and disseminate appropriate information
• Transmit information concerning hazardous street and weather conditions as well as any other responder safety information
• Handle all MABAS box alarms for Division 19
• Handle MABAS box alarms for Divisions 22 and 24 as needed
• Operate telecommunications equipment
• Type, file, and perform clerical duties as required
• Emergency Medical Dispatcher certified and licensed
• CPR certified
• Complete monthly continuing education
• Maintain as confidential all department information
• Perform other duties as assigned
