Position Details

Firefighter/Paramedic Minimum Requirements:

• $35 non-refundable application fee
• U.S. Resident
• No felony convictions, and no misdemeanor convictions for offenses outlined in the Rules & Regulations of the Board of Fire & Police Commissioners ("Board’s Rules")
• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Valid Illinois driver’s license or ability to obtain one
• 20 to under 35 years of age as of the date of the written exam (10/12/19), but must be 21 prior to appointment, unless otherwise provided by the Rules and Regulations and/or Illinois Statute (e.g., exception for attaining age 35 during military service, exception for certain previous full-time firefighter employment) 
• Illinois Department of Public Health or National Registry Paramedic License by application deadline
• Vision correctable to 20/20
• Possess good moral character and sound health
• Submission of an online application and all documents listed on the checklist by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18, 2019

Preference Point Information:

Preference points will be awarded for the following categories:

• Military - 5 points
• Experience Preference - 2 points
• Residency: within corporate limits of Des Plaines a minimum of one year as date of the exam - 1 point
• Additional Preference:
• Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in from an accredited college or university in Fire Service, Emergency Medical Services, or a related field, as determined applicable by the Fire Chief - 2 points
• Certification in the Northwest Community Hospital EMS System - 2 points
