Police Officer - Entry Level

Applicants for the position of Police Officer must met the following minimum qualifications and requirements at the time of application:

• A citizen of the United States with a valid Driver’s License
• At least 21 years of age but not yet 35 at time of application
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college OR at least 60 semester hours of college level course work AND minimum of two years full time sworn law enforcement experience (not including security agency experience)
• A valid POWER test card dated within six months of time of hire
• Agree to comply with all requirements of the position and have the ability to attend and pass all phases of testing
• Possess good moral character suitable to the role of a law enforcement officer
• Pass a thorough character and background investigation, which shall include a polygraph test, psychological assessment and medical examination

Testing Information:

Applicants who successfully meet the qualifications for the position will be sent details about the written exam via email. At the written examination applicants must provide proof of successful completion of the POWER test within the last six months. POWER Cards accepted from NIPSTA, Joliet Junior College and Southwest Illinois College. See those organizations for upcoming test dates/time and registration information.

Applicants who successfully pass the written examination will be scheduled for an in-person oral interview with the Board of Police Commissioners and an Eligibility List will be established.

Department Overview:

The Deerfield Police Department is a nationally accredited agency and is staffed by 43 sworn police officers and 15 civilians, including Social Service Providers. It is the mission of the Deerfield Police Department to provide professional and ethical services through partnership with citizens and proactively identifying risks to Deerfield's quality of life.

The Deerfield Police Department strongly believes in the philosophy of Community Policing. Village Information:

The Village of Deerfield (population 19,196) is located in Lake County with a portion in Cook County and covers an area of approximately 7.0 square miles. The Village is bordered to the west by Riverwoods, Highland Park to the east, Northbrook to the south and by Bannockburn and Lake Forest to the north. The Village is 27 miles from the Chicago Loop. The Illinois Tri-State Toll-road (Interstate 94) runs through the western part of the Village and the Toll-road spur connecting the Tri-State Toll-road and Eden’s Expressway (four miles east) is the approximate southern boundary of the Village.
