Position Details
The Village of Hoffman Estates is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Fire Marshal.
The Fire Marshal is responsible for professional and supervisory work coordinating fire inspections and other fire prevention activities of the Fire Department. The Fire Marshal shall lead the Fire Prevention Bureau and shall report directly to the Deputy Fire Chief of Administration or his/her designee. The position responds to and interacts with residents, employees, business representatives, and/or others within and outside the organization in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 4 to 10 yrs experience in a related field.
- 2 to 3 years supervisory experience is preferred
- Associates degree in Fire Science or closely related field is required.
- Valid Illinois driver's license required
- OSFM Basic Fire Prevention Officer certification required
- OSFM Advanced Fire Prevention Officer required within 30 months of hire.
- Freedom of Information Officer is required within 6 months of hire.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Building Automation Systems, Asset Management
WORK SCHEDULE:
40 hours per week
Monday - Friday
7:30 AM to 4:30 PM
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises, trains and evaluates Village fire inspectors, monitors productivity of inspectors, sets goals to meet the mission of the Fire Department and coordinates and participates in the work of the Fire Prevention Bureau.
- Conducts fire/life safety inspections of all possible occupancies for compliance with codes, including new construction inspections, remodeling, annual life safety and business license inspections. Resolves compliance issues with owners within scope of knowledge and authority. Oversees inspection work performed by other Village Fire Inspectors.
- Serves as the Fire Department's liaison with the Building Department and other local, state, and federal agencies; and represents the Fire Department on committees and other cooperative programs.
- Reviews plans of construction for new and existing occupancies for compliance with building and fire codes; assists architects, engineers and contractors in meeting code requirements; conducts inspections and tests of fire suppression systems; reviews plans and oversees inspection of underground tanks.
- Maintains a variety of logs and records related to inspections and enforcement activities (such as the annual inspection log); process incoming permit and plan review requests, prepares recommendations for amendments and additions to codes or regulations.
- Conducts public fire safety education programs; including those related to the use of fire protection equipment, fire prevention practices and the proper actions to be followed in the event of fires.
- Acts as the FOIA Officer for the Fire Prevention Bureau and processes Freedom of Information requests for such.
- Provides statistical data regarding future fire inspection requirements; conducts research and prepares reports on topics related to fire prevention; suggests improvements for staffing, organization, procedures and general operations of the Fire Prevention Bureau; assists in preparation of the Department's annual budget and capital improvement program, keeps abreast of new trends and technologies.
- Manages the Radio Fire Alarm Program.
- Investigates the cause and origin and circumstances of fire incidents occurring in the jurisdiction of the Hoffman Estates Fire Department, or as otherwise assigned; collects evidence; interviews witnesses and prepares reports.
- Provides Fire Department personnel with quarterly reports/updates on new construction projects, large renovation projects, developments, fire/safety issues, and Fire Prevention Bureau information.
- Makes recommendations to the Fire Department Administration, including interpretations of codes and other regulations; and prepares draft Code, policy and other regulatory language changes for consideration.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Fluency in a foreign language is a plus.
