Summary:

The purpose of this position is to perform patrol functions to ensure for the enforcement of laws and the protection of life and property.  This position acts under the supervision of the Sergeants.

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned. Reports for duty at specified time, maintains self in sound physical condition and maintains uniform and appearance in high standard in accordance with department policy.

  • Answers all emergency and non-emergency calls for service, remains alert to emergency needs of citizens and takes appropriate action to protect life and property.
  • Fosters positive relations throughout the community though community policing.
  • Studies and maintains knowledge of appropriate federal, state and local laws and judicial case law in areas such as self-incrimination; right to counsel; arrest; search and seizure; interrogation and confessions; and the collection and preservation of evidence.
  • Studies and maintains knowledge of departmental policies, and procedures.
  • Discovers and prevents the commission of crimes, enforces ordinances and all state and motor vehicle laws for designated areas.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witness statements, makes arrests, and escorts prisoners from the scenes of crimes.
  • Detains anyone wanted through the serving of warrants.
  • Investigates motor vehicle accidents and assists local fire department and ambulance personnel.
  • Makes dispositions of all complaints or inquiries or directs people to the proper organizations to handle the complaints.
  • Prepares evidence for issuance of complaints; serves criminal process, including warrants and subpoenas.
  • Completes reports compiling factual data, evidence and conduct interviews and interrogations when appropriate.  
  • Performs investigative duties that cover a wide range of cases.
  • Inspects scenes of crimes, accident sites, and other appropriate locations to identify possible physical evidence.
  • Takes appropriate measures to preserve potential evidence including taking photographs, making casts, taking custody, making detailed notes, and/or calling in appropriate experts as necessary.
  • Interviews victims of criminal activity and potential witnesses or suspects.
  • Arrests or detains suspects in accordance with proper legal procedure.
  • Prepares cases for court hearings and testifies in such hearings as required.
  • Acts in a relief capacity, working in other areas of the department as assigned.
  • Carries out any lawful order or duty as prescribed by the Chief or other supervisor.
  • Participates in and presents preventative education and information through community and school awareness projects; teaches and counsels those within the community on law enforcement activities, programs and referral resources.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed and adheres to all departmental and Village safety policies. Advises supervisor of hazards and corrective actions.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Age: Applicants for the position of police officer must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment and less than 35 years of age (not yet reached their 35th birthday unless currently a police officer in the State of Illinois) to be eligible to take an examination for an entry level position. A copy of the applicant’s birth certificate shall be furnished with the application.
  • Citizenship: Each applicant for an entry-level position must be a citizen of the United States, except an individual who is not a citizen but is legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law or is an individual against who immigration action has been deferred by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) process is authorized to apply for the position of police officer, subject to all requirements and  limitations, other than citizenship, to which other applicants are subject and the individual being authorized under federal law to obtain, carry, or purchase or otherwise possess a firearm.
  • Residency Requirement: Any person who becomes a Member of the Department shall become a resident of the Village or a resident within 20 air miles of the corporate limits of the Village, within 12 months from the date of his or her probationary.
  • Driver’s License: At the time of employment, the applicant must be legally eligible to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Illinois.
  • Physical/Health: All applicants who are given conditional offers of employment must undergo physical and psychological examinations by doctors selected by the Chief of Police or their designee.
  • Character: Each candidate must be of good character; must not have been convicted of any crimes or guilty of infamous or notoriously disgraceful conduct as described in the Illinois Compiled Statutes 65ILCS5/10-2/1-6 or any domestic violence related arrest and has attempted to practice any deception or fraud in any aspect of the application 625ILCS5/10-2.1-6.
  • Education: Each applicant must possess a high school diploma, GED, or high school proficiency exam certificate.
  • Fitness: Each applicant must possess a valid Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) test card demonstrating the applicant has completed the Illinois POWER test no more than one year prior to the date of the written examination.  The applicant shall furnish a copy of his/her active POWER test card with the application or on the day of testing.  It is preferred the applicant furnish the card with the application.

  • Work requires wearing specialized personal protective equipment.
  • May be subject to exposure to blood/body fluids and infectious and communicable diseases.
  • Work is primarily in the field. 

Selection Process:

Each applicant must achieve the minimum-passing grade required on each criteria of an examination.   The failure of an applicant to achieve the minimum passing grade for any criteria of an examination shall disqualify that applicant from any further participation in the examination process.

  • Written Examination: 70% minimum passing grade
  • Those applicants that scored 70% or higher on the written examination will advance to the personal or group interview stage on the same day as the written examination.   
  • Personal or Group Interview: 70% minimum passing grade
  • Background Check*: Pass/Fail
  • Psychological Examination*: Pass/Fail
  • Medical Examination*: Pass/Fail 

*The Commission and the Chief of Police (or his/her designee) shall defer the background check until an entry-level position is open.  The psychological examination and medical examination shall be deferred until after a conditional offer of employment has been made.
